In August of 2023 – based upon the increase in Christians coming to the area and the convictions of Pastor Mike Cross – Pastors Daryl, Brandon, and Mike of Aberdeen First Baptist Church (AFBC) began praying about the possibility of a Reformed Baptist Church (RBC) plant in Moore County, NC.
In September, by God’s providence, the Munson family visited AFBC after not finding a RBC and seeking to covenant together with a local church body. This brought together two like-minded families seeking to begin a RBC in Moore County. In response to God working, the pastors of AFBC found that the space, resources, convictions, and interest for a RBC was provided for and began looking at possible timelines for a church plant, pending support from AFBC. At the same time, Jon Munson was updating Cornerstone Reformed Baptist Church (CRBC) in Harlem, GA, about the work occurring in Moore County and placed Pastor Mike and Pastor Paul Morris in contact.
On October 2, the pastors of AFBC brought the plant to the deacon body for prayer and found the deacon body to be in support of a church plant beginning in January 2024 pending congregational approval. The pastors and deacons of AFBC, the pastor and congregation of CRBC, and faithful brothers of the Southeastern Association of Confessional Baptist Churches continued praying for the work that God was doing in Moore County.
On October 15, the pastors of AFBC brought the idea of a church plant to the congregation during a business meeting as an object of prayer and consideration. This allowed an opportunity for the congregation to ask questions and seek clarification about the possibility. Following this meeting, Pastor Mike began sending out information to the church regarding the reason for a RBC in the area.
On October 29, the Missions Ministry Leadership Team and pastors of AFBC brought a resolution of support for the new church to be called Still Waters Reformed Baptist Church (Still Waters RBC) to the congregation for consideration. AFBC planned two Question and Answer sessions with Pastor Mike and the other pastors to give information and resolve any questions or concerns.
On November 12, AFBC approved the resolution and Still Waters RBC was set to begin January 14, 2024, with the intention of meeting in the Cross family’s home in Pinebluff, NC. Following this, a prayer and interest group began meeting at Pastor Mike’s home.
On December 31, Pastor Mike left the staff of AFBC and focused completely on the start of Still Waters RBC. Over the next two weeks, Pastor Mike and Ashley, his wife, focused on preparing their home for the gathering of Still Waters RBC.
On January 14, 2024, under the grace of God, Still Waters RBC met for the first time to pray and worship. Over the next two months, Still Waters RBC continued meeting for worship and fellowship.
On March 10, Still Waters RBC met to establish membership, adopt the 2nd London Confession of Faith – also known as the 1689 London Baptist Confession – and membership covenant, and formally call Pastor Mike Cross as an elder and Jon Munson as a deacon. On March 17, CRBC voted to adopt a resolution of support for Still Waters RBC giving their congregational approval of the new work in NC.
